Program areas at OpenAQ

Air Quality Data Platform: OpenAQ provides the largest open-access, open-source air quality data platform in the world to meet the needs of air quality researchers, community advocates, journalists and other air quality changemakers. In 2023, the platform supported approximately 150 air quality-related research projects and communications, an average of over 12 per month. We launched OpenAQ Explorer, a new tool that provides visualizations and makes data on OpenAQ accessible to a much wider audience, as well as other tools to assist users - a Python wrapper and Command Line Interface. We added new data from around 2,200 new government stations and expanded data aggregated from low- and middle-income countries. We also increased the stability, reliability and resilience of our data platform, positioning it for continued growth and provision of data to a larger audience.
Community Engagement: Through webinars, trainings, speaking engagements, conference attendance, one-on-one meetings, impact stories and more, we have introduced potential new users to the OpenAQ data platform and supported existing users. Through our 2023 Community Ambassador program, we upskilled 10 emerging air quality leaders in low- and middle-income countries; their projects ranged from youth and community education and advocacy to intensive analysis of long-term local air pollution trends using air sensor data. We connected air quality data producers and users across sectors and geographies to support an international learning environment. These and other outreach activities have resulted in greater use of the platform for air quality analysis and clean air advocacy.
