Program areas at Other Minds
From October 14-17, 2021, Other Minds presented Other Minds Festival 25 at the Taube Atrium Theater in San Francisco. The event featured 26 musicians from the field of improvised music. The festival was delivered globally by a highly produced livestream hosted by OM Executive & Artistic Director Charles Amirkhanian and composer Pamela Z.
1.On March 5, 2022, Other Minds presented at Hertz Hall at the University of California in Berkeley a concert of various works including the U.S. premiere of Shostakovichs Firebird Suite, arranged for piano four hands by pianists Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa. The concert featured theater-scale projections of computer-generated graphics created in real time by Gerfried Stocker, Artistic Director of Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria.2.On June 6th, 2022, OM presented the American premiere of innovative Norwegian composer yvind Torvunds The Exotica Album, performed by the composer along with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, California. 3.Other Minds presented three installments of its ongoing concert/interview series The Nature of Music. On August 18th, 2021, OM hosted a live streamed conversation and presentation of various works by Canadian composer Hildegard Westerkamp; on April 12, 2022, OM presented works by Irish composer Karen Power at the studio of Paul Dresher in Oakland; and on May 11th, 2022, at the David Brower Center in Berkeley, OM presented composer Mexican composer Christopher Luna-Mega in the premiere of Night Music for reed quintet.4.OM presented at the David Brower Center a book launch event for DILEXI: A Gallery & Beyond, a new coffee table hardback documenting the life and work of Other Minds Co-founder Jim Newman. The event began with a performance by guitarist Gyan Riley and featured a panel chaired by former SF Chronicle Art Critic Charles Desmarais. He was joined by the books author Laura Whitcomb, former Pacific Film Archive curator Steve Seid, and musician and gallerist Jim Newman himself.
OM released seven new albums on CD, digital download, and LP. The recordings include works by Jim Nollman, Dary John Mizelle, Charles Boone, Charles Amirkhanian, Enzo Minarelli, Christopher Luna-Mega, and Brian Baumbusch.
