Program areas at Modern Military Association of America
LGBTQ+ MILITARY AND VETERAN SERVICES: MMAA supports the LGBTQ+ service members, veterans, and their families with specialized resource and advocacy guides, individualized support, MilPride programming, Strong Communities monthly meetings, participation in Pride activities (e.g., DC's Capital Pride march and festival), information sharing at conferences, tabling opportunities, legal referral sources, chapter management tools, and discrimination reporting tools. MMAA also maintained and built new relationships with military and veteran service organizations, Congressional offices, and coalition groups.
COMMUNICATIONS: In 2023, MMAA amplified stories of LGBTQ+ service members, veterans, and their families through press releases, media interviews, and Modern Military magazine. MMAA added new tools so individuals can more easily recognize LGBTQ+ military hometown heroes, shining star allies, share testimonials about the impact of the Drag Ban, and submit an MMAA Op-Ed. MMAA released a newly updated Freedom to Serve Guide, expanding upon the last update from 2018. MMAA published three Modern Military magazine issues, regular e-newsletter updates, and shared updates with its 50,000+ email subscribers, 100,000+ social media followers, and 25,000+ website visitors.
LEGAL & GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS: MMAA continued its impact litigation joining other LGBTQ+ advocates to file multiple lawsuits ranging from transgender service members rights to petitioning VA to establish anti-discrimination regulations. MMAA utilized the new LGBTQ+ and HIV discrimination reporting form to track discrimination, provide specialized support for those facing discrimination, and amplify the issues facing military members and veterans to DoD, VA, and Congress. MMAA presented Congress with an updated legislative agenda that included new issues related to DoD's Drag Ban, anti-discrimination riders in appropriations bills, and ensuring culturally competent LGBTQ+ care in VA facilities.
