Program areas at Oxon Hill Boys and Girls Club
The Oxon Hill Boys and Girls Club ("OHBGC") was organized in 1964 to provide sports programming and activities for school-aged youth and teens, including basketball, football, soccer, cheerleading, baseball, tennis and track. OHBGC collects membership fees from club participants towards the activities, facility rent and utilities, and provides insurances and safe facilities through volunteer coaches and instructors. The coaching staff is made up of volunteers who donate their time to the coaching activities. The activities are conducted throughout the year and vary per sport. Generally, activities are conducted 2-4 times per week, including weekends for 1 to 3 hours. Majority of the activities are conducted at the Oxon Hill Staff Development Center, located at 7711 Livingston Road, Oxon Hill, MD 20745; Tucker Road Park, located at 1641 Tucker Road Fort Washington, MD 20744. Sports education has continued to disappear from local schools and communities in recent years leaving more at-risk children who, as a result, spend more time on less productive activities. OHBGC offers a form of outreach that has a remarkably high involvement level and retention rate because children, once they get involved, genuinely enjoy the activities. OHBGC's programs give children creative and productive ways to spend their free time while encouraging them to develop their unique talents, build confidence, and develop team-building skills. The activities also enhance physical activity. The club allocates 100% of its time to the above activities. The activities are funded by the membership fees of club participants, fundraising activities and solicitation of support from local businesses.
The mission of OHBGC is to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. OHBGC's vision is to provide a program that can support and sustain itself while adequately providing an avenue for the children of our community to develop. OHBGC supports its mission and vision through leadership programs, volunteer work,, sports and teamwork. OHBGC continues to do community outreach through monthly food drives held the first Friday of each month, through our annual coat drive in November and our 1st annual toy drive being held in December.
