Program areas at Partnership for Safety and Justice
Shrinking the corrections system: we believe that far too many people convicted of crime are incarcerated or under some other form of correctional control. Overcriminalization and reliance on incarceration as the default response to crime raises barriers to safe, just, and healthy communities. We advocate for reinvestment of public resources in approaches that are more effective, less damaging, and meet the needs of the people most directly impacted both by crime and the criminal Justice system, including crime victims, people who have caused harm, their families, and their communities. Example: successful prevention of the expansion of prisons for women one of the fastest growing populations of incarcerated adults.
Transforming expectations of the criminal Justice system: we work to establish holistic reforms that address the needs of the people most directly impacted by crime and the criminal Justice system, rather than the system itself. We specifically focus on communities of color to ensure effective prevention, accountability, and expansion of resources needed to build healthy, safe communities. Example: particpation in successful opposition to efforts to increase criminalization of noncitizens and eliminate Oregon policies that protect its resident immigrants and their families.
Building local solutions: psj develops and advocates for essential services that crime survivors need to rebuild their lives as well as innovative local alternatives to criminalization and incarceration. We address the underlying causes of crime by promoting accountability, healing, and Safety through community-centered approaches, such as restorative Justice, harm reduction, and health-based responses. Example: enactment and expansion of the family sentencing alternative program.
Advocacy leadership academy: we mobilize people to act on critical issues through community events, advocacy opportunities, and educational forums. The advocacy leadership academy prioritizes individuals from bipoc communities and others who have been affected by the criminal Justice system.
Health Justice recovery alliance: fiscally sponsored by the Partnership for Safety and Justice, the health Justice recovery alliance is the statewide recovery advocacy coalition working to ensure that the drug addiction treatment & recovery act is implemented fully and without delay, centering the needs of communities most harmed by the war on drugs black, latinx, native and tribal communities.
