Program areas at People Matter

Garden fellows is our after-school program that built solidarity between 58 black, brown and asian students ages 11-19 and communitites through gardening, environmental justice education, and leadership skills building. We taught 15 workshops on leadership, 5 workshops on racial literacy and 7 workshops on environmental justice. We also finished 4 community garden projects including 2 pop-up community gardens where we gave out over 50 grocery bags and plants, and 2 community planters for our local school and library.
In our education and housing campaign, we fought for a high school for chinatown that does not displace black public housing residents. To pressure the city, we co-held 6 press conferences and 1 town hall. We engaged over 500 residents and collected 200 petitions asking for an alternative site. We also held 2 focus groups with 25 parents and 29 students to gather their input.
Anti blackness work - we launched the first ever black heroes of chinatown national event, in which we celebrated 6 black heroes from 4 cities across the us. We partnered with 5 chinatown organizations and reached over 250 community members. We taught over 70 students through our unlearning internalized anti-blackness classes and workshops.
