Description
The PKD Outreach Foundation has a mission to end Polycystic Kidney Disease. It partners with transplant centers, nutritionists, and reproductive specialists to help families find live kidney donors, discover ways to slow the progression of PKD, and expand the live donor pool. pkDO has sponsored trials at both UofU and Northwell Health to increase live kidney donation and expects real results from both initiatives during 2023. Additionally, there has been great progress in identifying strategies to delay the progression of PKD.

Program areas at PKD Outreach Foundation

During 2023 and into 2024 we have two major initiatives:1)PKD Free Babies - Our 100 PKD-Free Babies initiative is providing the funding and support to bring about a new generation of PKD-free children. Our ambition is to reduce the number of babies born with PKD from ~7500/year to all PKD Free Births. We have ignited this effort with an initial goal of subsidizing 100 PKD-free children. Our current program offers $3,000 per patient to cover the cost of preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) not covered by insurance. We are in the process of finalizing arrangements with two national fertility centers to provide families enrolled in our program with significant discounts, which combined with an increased grant from pkDO will reduce the out-of-pocket cost for one round of IVF/PGT from ~$30k to ~$15k.This new program will significantly increase the number of PKD-impacted families we can assist in having a PKD-Free Future.PKD Free Babies - 2023 Results4 - Medical Center Partners 2- National IVF Center Partners12 - Social Media Partners38 Families Seeking our assistance~20 PKD-Free Babies In Process4 PKD-Free Babies Born in 20232)Live Kidney Donation Initiative - Our efforts have helped incubate a new organization solely focused on this initiative that is staffed by highly trained individuals that have over a decade of experience assisting with live donor transplants and the desire to build a scalable organization to provide this service across multiple transplant centers. In 2023 pkDO partnered with this new organization and one of our medical center partners on an 8-person pilot program which was conducted with considerable success. Plans are being made for an expanded 25-person pilot to start early in 2024. This initiative now has a life of its own and we are one of several backers for the success and growth of this important initiative.
