Description
Plants and Blooms Reimagined aims to make therapeutic horticultural engagement accessible for vulnerable communities in the DC area by repurposing flowers and indoor plants. Its Flower Recovery and Repurposed Arrangement Delivery program has increased distribution to senior facilities as access became available after day programs reopened in April 2021. The organization's Therapeutic and Educational program was still impacted by the pandemic in 2021, with most partnering organizations resuming modified on-site programming in April.

Program areas at Plants and Blooms Reimagined

Traditional bouquet donations to senior sites were halted or significantly limited due to Covid. PBR's Flower Recovery and Repurposed Arrangement Delivery program shifted its distribution in large part, by way of newly formed partnerships, to community based organizations in conjunction with their food distribution to longstanding and newly food insecure persons. More than 1500 arrangements were donated resulting from a significant increase in flower donations from growers (surplus flowers due to canceled events) and from a newly established partnership with the Bainum Foundation Farm that grows food and flowers solely for the benefit of DC's under resourced communities.
The organization does not have a third largest program service.
PBR's Therapeutic and Educational program's customary in-person programming was halted due to Covid. One successful adaptation was the implementation of weekly teleconference sessions (vs. one monthly in-person session) for Seabury Resources for Aging's blind and visually impaired older adults. Program adaption also included monthly Covid safe deliveries of either indoor plants or flower arrangements, both as a means of facilitating characteristic in-person interactive experiences, as well as regular contact to offset the adverse effects of shelter in place isolationism. Participation doubled from an average of 10 to 20 participants.
