Program areas at Poets and Writers
Poets & Writers magazine is the leading publication for Poets and Writers of literary prose. Published six times a year, it delivers to its readers profiles of noted authors and publishing professionals, practical how-to articles, and the most comprehensive list of grants and awards available in print. Poets & Writers magazine has over 50,000 paid subscribers; it is also sold on newsstands nationwide.
The readings & workshops program makes mini-grants to Writers who participate in public literary events and provides technical assistance to event organizers. The program supports events taking place in new york and California, as well as eight cities outside these states: atlanta, chicago, detroit, houston, new orleans, seattle, tucson, and Washington, d.c.
Poets & Writers' website, pw.org, offers select content from Poets & Writers magazine as well as online-only editorial features and a suite of carefully vetted databases of writing contests, literary magazines, small presses, literary agents, mfa programs, review outlets, and more. Also online are the Poets & Writers directory, which lists more than 11,000 published Writers, and Poets & Writers groups, a peer-to-peer networking tool that enables Writers to form, join, and manage writing groups.
Get the word out is a new publicity incubator that helps early-career authors develop a strategic marketing plan. Participants are selected through a competitive application process. Mapping the maze is an online workshop that demystifies the publishing process to help Writers chart a path to publication. It introduces Writers from around the country to agents, editors, and other publishing professionals. Additional online courses are planned. Poets & Writers also sponsors two prominent literary awards: the maureen egen Writers exchange award and the jackson poetry prize.
