Program areas at Police Athletic League of KCKS
More than 1,700 children have come to the PAL and registered as members since 2019, shortly after our founding. In 2022, approximately 620 youth participated regularly in free PAL programs, most in multiple activities. More than 60% of the children we serve live in households with annual income below $30,000. Approximately 67% of PAL's youth members are Hispanic, 20% Black/African American, and 13% Asian, Pacific Islander or Caucasian. 63% are male and 37% are female. More than a dozen PAL programs and activities are offered completely free for youth. Programs range from art to archery to gardening & nutrition in our expansive outdoor classroom. Our fitness/boxing program, academic tutoring and Driver's Education program are among the most popular programs, supporting hundreds of youth paired up with police officers, professional coaches, licensed teachers and trained adult mentors. More than 180 teens have completed our Driver's Ed course and earned their Kansas permits and drivers' licenses. We encourage significant community involvement among the families we serve, and we require 30 hours of community service for students in some of our programs. All students are required to demonstrate consistent attendance in school and we are helping many students now graduate from high school with the help of our growing tutoring program and trained adult tutors. Many of our graduates have been introduced to local workforce opportunities while at the PAL. In 2022, we served more than 4,000 free meals for youth and their families at our facility in our Wednesday community dinners program, and hosted dozens of events inside the PAL and outside in our community garden.
