Program areas at Postpartum Progress
Education and Training - Working together with the National Council for Behavioral Health, in 2016 Postpartum Progress trained 100 survivors of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders in Mental Health First Aid, an evidence-based full-day training program that prepares everyday people to help anyone with a mental illness. Additionally, in 2016 Postpartum Progress hosted its 2nd annual patient-centered conference on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. This event focused on celebrating recovery, building community, and helping empower survivors to raise awareness and provide peer support in their own communities by giving them skills and advocacy training. Tickets to the conference have sold out both years. In 2016 we had nearly 200 attendees from 42 states, 3 Canadian provinces and the UK.
Offline Awareness - In 2015 we distributed nearly 30,000 "Hugs cards," and our New Mom Get Help Checklist was distributed to approximately 40,000 mothers in 39 US states and 5 Canadian provinces by therapists, childbirth educators, doulas, home visiting nurses, nurse practitioners, lactation consultants, OB offices, social workers and advocates. All of the materials we develop help explain PPD and related illnesses, reduce stigma, and encourage moms to seek professional help. We know our content works because 75% report Postpartum Progress increased their willingness to seek professional help for their maternal mental illness.
Climb out of the Darkness - Climb Out of the Darkness is the world's largest event raising awareness of maternal mental illness. It is held each year in June on or around the longest day of the year to symbolize shining the most possible light on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Moms get together in communities across the globe to climb mountains, hike trails, walk paths and share their stories while also raising funds for our nonprofit. Our 2016 Climb had more than 4,000 Climbers, 180 teams in 46 US states, 6 Canadian provinces, the United Kingdom, Scotland, Brazil and Israel, and generated more than 150 million media impressions.
