Preserve Calavera Highlights for 2023Restoring native habitat: Performed monthly restorations and plantings at Rancho La Costa location. Performed 14 restoration days at El Corazon location, plus large restoration at Calle Pera (Carlsbad) location.Lands management: Reviewed and commented on numerous local development projects, plus settled on two environment impact projects in Oceanside, CA. Participated and hosted annual cleanup events, including El Salto Falls.Water Quality: Preserve Calavera continues to lead the ongoing bimonthly regional water shed testing. This includes providing supplies, leading volunteers, water and data collection, testing samples, and analyzing results, including DNA and microplastics testing.Climate Change/Green House Gas (GHG) Reduction: Using the Oceanside Green House Gas Emissions Reduction Fund (OGHGERF), sponsored tree plantings at multiple Oceanside schools. Funded 3 solar projects at Oceanside non-profits. Funded 2 eBikes for police at Mira Costa Community College. Also negotiated 3 large housing projects to go all electric.Education/Outreach: Graduated the 6th class of California Naturalists (in conjunction with University of California, San Diego) with weekly class instruction provided by Preserve Calavera Board Members. Participated and performed annual wildflower hike, endangered species day, and planting for pollinators events.Published our monthly newsletter with educational topics related to our mission statement.Community Scientist Projects: hosted CA King Tide Projects, Grunion monitoring and Bat Hike.Wildlife: Developed a plan to update analysis of Oceanside wildlife corridor, for work that will be performed in 2024. Continued to explore land acquisitions that are favorable for land conservation related to wildlife corridors and watersheds.
