Program areas at PARL
Parl provided vital services and programs to community members in rhode island and beyond in 2022. Parl's core programs experienced continued growth or boosted impact compared to pre-pandemic years, effectively serving over 3,600 animals during the year through its adoption, spay/neuter, pet food pantry, and preventative vet care clinics. Parl took in 844 animals in 2022 (446 cats, 238 dogs, and 160 small animals). Intakes included animals transferred in from Providence Animal control and other agencies/rescues and surrenders of owned pets in the community. The three most common reason for pet surrender in 2022 was housing challenges (36.5%), human family member died or was in poor health (20.3%), or family was unable to keep the pet due to financial challenges (16.2%). Of all Animal intakes in 2022, 701 were adopted. In 2022, 43 animals were transferred to other Rescue groups and/or were returned to their owners (compared to 36 transfers/returns in 2021). Parl started the year with 54 animals in custody and ended the year with 106 animals in custody. Parl values transparency and publishes complete intake/outcome data on its website annually.parl's low-cost spay neuter program faced ongoing challenges securing a regular schedule of contracted relief vets throughout the year. This was largely due to a nationwide shortage of veterinarians. Still, the clinic performed a total of 1,307 spay/neuter surgeries for dogs, cats, and rabbits in 2022. In 2022, 375 of the total surgeries were performed on shelter animals and 932 were performed on community pets through parl's low-cost spay/neuter program. Parl significantly increased preventative vet care initiatives in 2022, organizing 16 low-cost vaccine and microchipping clinics for community dogs and cats during the year. Demand for this routine care continued to grow in 2022, reflecting in a 126% increase in animals served through this vital community program compared to the previous year. Parl provided 2,476 vaccines, 163 nail trims, and 669 microchips to a total of 1,538 animals in 2022. Parl's pet food pantry program continued to experience significant demand compared to pre-pandemic totals, likely due to increasing financial hardships facing pet parents in the community. Unfortunately, inflation and product shortages resulted in difficulties keeping the pantry fully stocked to meet the growing demand. Still, parl distributed 58,858 pet meals and 1,437 bags of cat litter to companion animals in the community. Parl's low-cost and/or free community support programs were highly effective in supporting pets and the people who love them, helping keep families together and supporting the health and wellbeing of companion animals in need.
