Providence advances progress on our carbon negative goal and in 2023 we estimated that we decreased emissions by over 12 percent compared to our 2019 baseline. In addition, our efforts led to the introduction of the green hospitals act, legislation modeled after Providence that would provide critical federal funding to weatherize and modernize health care facilities. Providence completed a comprehensive climate resilience plan in alignment with our commitment to the us department of health and human services climate pledge. We continue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with a focus on led lighting upgrades, water conservation, more efficient delivery of nitrous oxide gas during anesthesia, and advancing our waste optimization work across all hospitals and clinics.realizing our mission since 1955, Providence Benedictine Nursing Center (pbnc) has been a model of excellence, innovation, and best practices that include patient and family spiritual and emotional support in addition to physical care. Contributions through our Foundation, goverened by a local volunteer board, support our programs and services and help pbnc better serve the elderly. In 2023 donations to the Foundation were used for a variety of projects: charity care for the poor and vulnerable: $120,000 in support of patients with limited financial resources has helped keep pbnc open to all those in need.paying for chaplains, and spiritual care expenses for our patients and residents.medical equipment for those in need including specialty wheelchairs and cushions.new landscaping and outdoor spaces for patients, families, residents, and caregivers.building maintenance and beautification projects that enhance and maintain the environment for reflection and healing.home health patients receive special equipment that our caregivers identify as needed but are otherwise not available or funded. This was formerly paid for personally by caregivers or left as an unmet need.resident therapists can order specialized attachments and equipment not otherwise funded. Wheelchairs, bed, and walker items that would otherwise be unfunded are regularly purchased.foundation funds also support building and equipment needs submitted throughout the year by department managers.
