Program areas at Public Advocates
Metropolitan Equity: The Metropolitan Equity Team advocates for equitable development, affordable housing, tenant protections, reliable and affordable transit service and policies to break down patterns of segregation and the inequitable allocation of public and private resources. To build the capacity of base-building organizations and elevate grassroots voices, we co-lead or convene regional and state networks, including the Bay Area 6 Wins Network and Voices for Public Transportation coalitions and the statewide Housing NOW! California, Stable Homes and California Social Housing coalitions. (Continued at Schedule O)
Education Equity: In FY 2022-23, Public Advocates' Education Equity Team helped maintain and strengthen K-12 school funding despite a significant state budget shortfall. Key wins included an 8.22% Cost of Living Adjustment that will enable districts to hire and retain more teachers; a $300 million "Equity Multiplier" fund dedicated to closing student outcome and teacher quality gaps for disadvantaged students at the state's poorest schools; and provisions to strengthen the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) and districts' capacity to use the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) for comprehensive strategic planning and continuous improvement. Our report, "Realizing the Promise of LCFF: Recommendations from the First Ten Years," provided persuasive leverage for this advocacy. (Continued at Schedule O)
