Program areas at Quantum Theatre
Quantum Theatre typically produces a subscription series of three productions staged environmentally all over the city of pittsburgh in places that are not theatres. Their plays experiment in many ways. They are often new works or american premieres and often bring key artists from other countries and mix cultural forms. Quantum Theatre occupies a unique and important place in pittsburgh's vital arts culture. Patrons reflect every neighborhood of the city, as Quantum Theatre gains attendees from neighborhoods in which it performs and brings patrons into neighborhoods unfamiliar to them. Through the covid-19 pandemic, the company adapted, presenting a series of ambitious streamed productions before leading pittsburgh back to live performance in june of 2021. Its nearbuy local commerce initiative furthers economic development efforts in the city by directing Quantum Theatre's patrons to businesses near its performance sites and matching purchases to fight food insecurity. Quantum Theatre additionally conducts educational activities to broaden its audience and educate existing patrons.
Quantum Theatre also conducts a high school and middle school residency project. Quantum Theatre's director of education is a teaching artist who goes weekly for six weeks into four inner-city high schools to help students interpret a classic play, a piece of literature, or a historical event in their own contemporary terms. The students use dialogue, music, and dance to express themes and characters, and come together to perform for each other and the professionals in Quantum Theatre's unusual project locations, and to see Quantum Theatre's finished work. The educational program teaches creative thinking skills, animates english and history curriculum, and mixes students from many pittsburgh neighborhoods.
