Program areas at Quincy Symphony Orchestra
Symphony Orchestra and chorus educates the public on the study and culture of instrumental and vocal music. Celebrated 75th anniversary with 10 concerts from october to april, with programming tied to the organization's history. Provided free admission for age 18 and under to all concerts (294 children). Commissioned visual artist to create an original big screen Orchestra accompaniment. Orchestra performed major works including tchaikovsky's Symphony no. 5, dvorak's Symphony no. 8, and performances by virtuosic violin and piano soloists. Featured the dallas brass with Orchestra, chorus & youth chorus at christmas. Facilitated dallas brass outreach into jr & sr highs in Quincy and macomb, il. Chorus performed fall & spring concerts. Orchestra performed free educational concerts for 2900 students from 24 schools from 9 counties. Commissioned and premiered a new work for Orchestra by roger zare. The finale concert included respighi's pines of rome with a dozen extra brass in the balcony of morrison theater.
Quincy area youth chorus (qayc) concert choir (grades 7 to 12) and kinderchor (grades 3 to 7) performed fall & spring concerts, and joined the Quincy Symphony and chorus at christmas. Concerts featured songs in several languages. Students with financial need received free tuition. The concert choir traveled to st. louis for their first ever judged competition. They were ranked first in their division, receiving a superior rating. Qayc served students from 27 schools from 5 counties.
Quincy area youth Orchestra (qayo) provided music instruction & performance opportunities to area student musicians in grades 7 to 12. Students with financial need received free tuition. Traveled to macomb, il for masterclasses with wiu faculty. Commissioned and premiered a new work by william camphouse side-by-side with the Quincy Symphony. Performed a spring concert including works by rimsky-korsakov, african american composer samuel coleridge-taylor, and 4 living composers. Qayo served students from 14 schools from 5 counties.
Encore Symphony volunteer council provides volunteer support and general fundraising for qsoa with a focus on youth music education. Held battle for baton and fairy tale tea fundraisers. Provided 9020 to qsoa, 940 to qsoa endowment, and 7400 in grants to high school musicians for summer music study, private music lessons, and concerto competition awards, and Quincy's public & parochial school music programs.
