Program areas at Read for Life
"books for kids" distributes book packets to parents of young children encouraging reading at an early age & supplying samples of appropriate books. The program provides approximately 7,000 - 8,000 gently used books and serves approximately 600 children annually.
"books for babies" distributes book packets to parents of newborn babies encouraging reading at an early age & supplying samples of appropriate books. The program provides new books and serves approximately 600 children annually.
Headstart and teenage parenting programs: "headstart program" prepares students for success in kindergarten. A school district program that Read for Life supplements by providing each child with 5 new books, and by training parents how to Read aloud to their child. Serves approximately 1,600 children at 60 school sites annually. "teenage parenting program" works with teens in tulare county to encourage parents to Read to their babies and toddlers. Volunteers visit classrooms to share and demonstrate literacy techniques to enhance the knowledge and benefits of reading to their children. Currently, Read for Life provides new books to teen age parenting programs and head start sites county wide. Three distributions of age appropriate quality literature are donated to each site throughout the school year. These books help begin a child's personal library at home, providing a greater potential for success in school.
"bright start" is a program providing in-home trainings to parents of disabled children ages birth to three on how to foster a learning environment before the children are of school age. "shelter buddies" is a program which gives second and third grade children an expanded experience of improving their reading skills by reading to shelter animals. "home base migrant pre-school" provides new books and parent/teacher training to about 1,000 children in several migrant educational pre-school programs throughout tulare county. "women's migrant workers convention program" provides children's books as part of the education/literacy component of an annual conference established to educate female migrant workers on resources available for education, health, safety, and employment.
