Program areas at Rio Hondo Education Consortium

14,026 low-income K-12 youth were served across 15 public elementary/middle schools and 9 high schools for 180 days before/after school during the school year, 20 days during the summer, and during school breaks through the ASPIRE and PREP programs. Daily activities within PREP and ASPIRE were aligned with school day instruction and included homework help, tutoring, academic enrichment, physical fitness, and experiential field trips. In addition, 333 girls and 699 boys were served in the KidsPlay program in gender-specific sports leagues. The program provided organized sports opportunities in Basketball, Olympic Handball, Flag Football, and Cross-Country for youth who might not have had the opportunity to play otherwise at no cost to the youth. The emphasis of KidsPlay is to provide youth an opportunity to play, learn and develop their confidence and sports skills, while learning about healthy lifestyles.In surveys, students indicated they benefitted academically, socially, and emotionally from their participation in our programs. 93% of students reported a positive experience in the program overall. 87% of students felt they could focus and do better in school, 88% felt they learned to study better, and 85% reported enjoying coming to school more because of their participation in the program. As a result of their participation in the program, 84% of students felt they learned skills that will help them be successful in school and life and 80% of students learned about different colleges and career paths.In surveys, parents reported their students greatly benefitted academically and socially from their participation, and believed their students participation helped them better define goals for the future. 93% stated their student(s) enjoyed attending the program and 96% would recommend the program to another parent or student. 89% of parents agree the program provides students with opportunities they do not have access to anywhere else and 95% of parents agreed that the program helped their child do better in school overall.STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES: 7,659 students in grades K-8 were served during our Saturday LEARN Academy where students were provided high quality, research-based instruction, specially designed to increase student academic achievement in math and science. A total of 48 hours of service were provided from September 2022 May 2023. We provided 53,714 points of service through the in-class tutoring program with six Whittier area high schools. The In-Class Tutoring Program was designed to increase students academic achievement and engagement by providing high-quality, rigorous, and engaging tutoring within students classrooms. One benefit that students indicated emerged from their participation in our program was a sense of belonging and improved academic performance resulting from their engagement with our staff. 87% of students stated they felt more comfortable in their academic skills and abilities and reported feeling more successful in school. Similarly, 97% of parents indicated they were satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of support services we offered throughout the academic school year.
