Program areas at Rochester Oasis
Health - Oasis Rochester focuses on increasing awareness, knowledge and skills for older adults to address their individual health and wellness needs. The classes emphasize current research on aging, falls prevention, physical activities and exercise, as well as other health issues facing older adults. In 2023, Oasis Rochester offered exercise and health related classes via in person, zoom and hybrid means.
Volunteer service - Oasis Rochester works with the greece and churchville chili central school districts to offer the Oasis intergenerational tutoring program. This program trains and matches volunteer tutors with primary grade children (k-4) to build reading skills, confidence and positive attitudes toward learning.volunteers also assist in running the education center, registering class participants, distributing catalogs, and assisting with special events and teaching classes.in 2023, 59% of classes were taught by volunteers, with 15 volunteers assisting in the tutoring program.
Education - Oasis Rochester offers courses and presentations across a wide range of subjects, including the arts, science, humanities, history, languages, wellness/health, musical performances, day trips and museum visits. Oasis Rochester schedules approximately 70-120 edifying topics each trimester that are taught by qualified academic and professional instructors. In 2023, Oasis Rochester offered approximately 315 classes and enrolled 773 unique participants.
Technology literacy - Oasis Rochester provides a variety of technology classes for its participants to assist older adults improve their technology literacy. This evidence-based connections curriculum, developed and updated on an on-going basis by the Oasis institute, includes topics such as android and iphone basics and intermediate phone skills and cybercrime fighters, which provides information on scams, phishing and password protection.
