Program areas at Rome Community Theater
Royalties: Almost without exception publishers charge royalty fees for each performance of a play. Royalties are paid to publishers as representatives of the playwrights and if a musical production composer and lyricist. Basic royalty costs differ from play to play and are usually based on whether or not the performing group is professional or amateur the seating capacity of the performance venue and the ticket prices paid by audience members. In most community theater organizations as is the case with Rome community Theater royalties represent the single most costly component of a stage production. Additionally royalty-like fees are charged by music publishers such as ASCAP BMI and SESAC that represent the composer and or performer of a recorded music selection which may be used in conjunction with a stage play to provide mood or scene appropriate music before the curtain and during intermission. These music license fees are included in the royalty expenses noted here.
Concessions: This expense represents the purchase of concession inventory for re-sale as well as necessary equipment and New York State sales tax levied on the concession items sold.
Production Expenses: This area of expense is required to fulfill the major requirement of the stated goals of the organization which include costs to present live theatrical productions to the public. The expenses noted here represent the cost to construct costumes build sets create stage properties print programs solicit adjudications and purchase scripts. Ancillary expenses not included in this figure are costs to maintain the playhouse facility occupancy - the largest single expense for the organization. The single largest production component royalties is listed as a separate expense above.
