Program areas at Roots of Peace
The community based agriculture and rural development access to international markets (cbard) project connects clients, farmers and agribusinesses in nangarhar, farah and badghis provinces to national & international markets. The project seeks to provide alternative high value licit crops and thereby deter the cultivation of poppy in these provinces. Cbard instucts farmers in how to produce high value fruits, nuts & vegetables, then adds value to these products through improved sorting, grading & packaging. Supplying better quality products will increase income to cbard supported exporters & promote licit commercial activities in active poppy producing regions.
The "area-based approach for development emergency initiatives" (abadei) is funded by contributions to undp, as well as through the special trust fund for afghanistan. Funding provides short-term, humanitarian assistance aimed at safeguarding livelihoods and strengthening community resilience. In response to the august 15th events in afghanistan and a undp study that projected up to 97 percent of the population could be at risk of sinking below the poverty line, the government of japan donated nearly usd 3 million to the undp abadeiinitiative. With these funds, undp administered the abadei programme for community resilience in afghanistan through its implementing partner, Roots of Peace (rop). The project was designed to be implemented over a five-month period from november 2021 through march 2022. Its purpose was to address the immediate livelihood needs of afghanistan's most vulnerable populations through community-based interventions that foster resilience and strengthen human security.
The agriculture marketing program (amp) is funded by usaid & works in 11 provinces of afghanistan, focusing on increasing farm production & domestic sales through interventions aimed at farmers & agribusiness. Amp works with leading afghan processing & export firms to increase export volumes and values, introduce new agricultural products to the market, diversify export markets & increase value added processing. The program's market based, demand-driven approach focuses on supporting private sector growth and sustainability, thereby creating demand for agricultural products that drive job growth in rural areas. Total 3 year budget: $33 millions.
Since 2010, Roots of Peace has worked in quang tri province, vietnam. During the vietnam war, more bombs were dropped in this province than world war i and world war ii combined. Over 75% of the land remains contaminated by explosive remnants of war. For the past decade, rop has worked to replace these minefields with flourishing crops. Our team trains farmers to grow high value crops & export to new markets, planting Peace from the ground up.
