Program areas at Rosie the Riveter Trust
Maritime child development center - the center opened in 1943 to care for the children whose parents worked at the nearby kaiser shipyards. the organization completely restored and reopened it as a multi-use building in 2011 (a richmond revitalization effort). Today the maritime houses a small exhibit by the national park service of a wartime preschool classroom, the organization's office and richmond charter prep preschool and elementary school. In 1999, the organization was created the help establish the Rosie the riveter/world war ii home front national historical park in 2000 with the goal to preserve park sites across richmond including the opening of the park visitor education center located in the oil house of the ford building complex.
Rosie's service corps - the organization uses "Rosie" history to communicate and exemplify collaboration and the value of strength found in serving others. the program's focus is career preparedness educating on career opportunities, goal setting, financial literacy among other skills. Youth have opportunities to attend outdoor activities, trades training, and career education, to build self-confidence and self-awareness for opening up life's horizons.
Public education - the organization preserves park sites across richmond, like the maritime child development center and visitor center, which are key components of the organization's mission and program for public education to teach those within the richmond community and beyond about the rich and important history of the rosies and the wwii home front. History is shared on site at these locations via collections and memorabilia, text, images, film. Other projects like the betty soskin film project utilize documentaries to pass on the history in a personal and powerful way in a format available for distribution to classrooms and online across the country.
Rosie the Riveter Trust seeks grants to support historic preservation of national park sites, the sharing of home front stories that include the legacy of Rosie the riveters and youth programming aimed at inspiring students to be leaders and support community wellbeing.
