Program areas at Rubicon Theatre Company
The organization presents a mainstage season of classic and contemporary dramas and comedies, including world premieres, for the entertainment and enrichment of residents and visitors to the community. In this fiscal year, the company produced a landmark production of In the Heights directed by Luis Salgado (part of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production), A Lonesome Traveler Christmas, The Realistic Joneses (in collaboration with Gare St Ireland and Laguna Playhouse), and the world premiere developmental production of Dark of the Moon. The organization also presented a concert series of music from diverse genres to draw new audiences and offer increased opportunities for music appreciation.
Rubicon expanded the company's educational offerings during this season. A record number of participants engaged in Rubicon's summer education camps and intensives. The four programs for students ages 6 - 22 included the Stinky Feet Theatre Project, Middle School Musical Theatre, Fearless Shakespeare and Young Adult Musical Theatre. These programs returned to Rubicon after having been produced outside for the past two seasons on the campus of Villanova Prep School in Ojai. Student matinees at the theatre continued with Dark of the Moon and In the Heights; however, for the latter, Rubicon cast members also presented on-site school assemblies in Ventura and Oxnard Unified School Districts. The cast also broke into small groups and went into classrooms with specially developed curricula around the themes and issues in the play. Rubicon reached 5,200 students with this program alone.
