Preservation, stabilization, planning & restoration of National Register-listed historic houses for future use as museums, gift shop/office & archaeology field school workshop as follows: Jacob Nixon house as Archaeology Workshop/Gallery: Installed 10 yr old ceiling & floor boards; installed all new electric lines & AC/Heat system; water connection to site; termite treatment & fumigation; installed security windows; Prairie View A & M University Architect Student Intern documented 7 historic windows; removed, restored, & reinstalled 3 historic windows. J. Vance Lewis house as Museum of Legal Professions & Educators: Replaced damaged roof with historically-appropriate Berridge metal-shingles; restored porch columns; re-inforced front & rear porches beam; architectural & engineering services Work with contractors & structural engineer to plan & install additional concrete piers and beams. Isabelle Sims cottage as Gift Shop/Gallery/Tour Office: Architectural services provided. Engineers did structural assessment: Removed non-historic materials from interior. City of Houston COA permit approved to begin historic restoration. Rev. Ned Pullum house as Health & Business Museum: Installed donated commerical roof tarp to stop damage to interior; managed the conservation of historic rose bushes.
Two University of Houston Anthropology Student Interns were hired. Two commercial units were rented for the storage of donated antique furnishings, archaeology equipment & hundreds of bins for artifacts for access by collection managers. Several volunteers worked with Student interns who transferred & processed artifacts & developed exhibit cases. We hosted 40 tour groups & student field trips from schools in Harris County. We hosted Preservation Volunteer working weekends for employees from 4 companies.
Two historic sites owned by RBHYates Museum was awarded "Sites of Memory associated to the UNESCO-Slave Route in March 2019. In 2022, under the direction of the Research Historian, and the Archaeologist/Curator, several paid university archaeology student interns, new archaeology reports were added to several of the original 74 UNESCO nominations under consideration. The properties are within the National Register Historic District of Freedmen's Town & the related sites from Texas to Mexico.
