Program areas at Safe Hands for Girls
The u.s. Advocacy program provides training of fgm survivors to become information advisors in their own communities. It also includes various workshops around multiple u.s. cities to teach practicing communities about fgm and to work with front line professionals. Youth education programs are conducted in after school settings for middle and high school refugee students at colleges and universities with large immigrant populations and helping them become advocates for their own health.
The breaking barriers program, based in multiple u.s. cities, offers mentorship; help with school; and links young Girls (from immigrant and refugee backgrounds) with local resources and leadership opportunities, while preventing practices of fgm and child marriage.
The gambian advocacy program provides training of fgm survivors to become information advisors in their own communities. It also includes various workshops around surrounding villages to teach practicing communities about fgm and to work with front line professionals.
The global advocacy program raises awareness of the plight to end fgm and child marriage, and brings attention to these issues in order to shape policy and resource mobilization. Safe Hands for Girls works with governments and un bodies from all over the world to bring much needed attention to these issues.
An event was held on january 9-12, 2022 to have a dialogue with the young men of the central river region of the gambia on fgm, gbv, and child marriage; to discuss their thoughts on the issue; and on how they plan to help end the practice in the country and within their region, at large. It is believed that with their help, fgm and other harmful practices can end.
A follow-up activity, was held on march 14-23, 2022, in conjunction with the young advocacy program, to train school, peer health clubs on how to manage a school clubs and to maintain them efficiently.
An event was held on february 22-25, 2022 to show the documentary, kullol meng bukafo (meaning "the untold secrets or the hidden secret in the organization's local language, to raise awareness of obstetric fistula, an issue that women are suffering from in the gambia. The documentary, which included doctors, survifors of fgm, and fistula patients, also informed participants on how, where, and when to get help. It was translated into four (4) local languages, and played around several regions surrounding the gambia.
The united nations general assembly, held on september 9-10, 2022, was one of the six principal organs of the united nations, serving as the main deliberative, policymaking, and representative organ of the un. This occasion was used to organize side events that helped raise the profile of both fgm and child marriage and to get countries to create and implement laws.
