Founded in chicago by the sisters of mercy in 1846, Saint Xavier University is a distinguished, four-year, private catholic institution that educates for competence, character and career success. Chicago's first catholic University and the first mercy institution of higher learning in the world, Saint Xavier is student-centered and mission driven, inspiring its student community of doers to be morally courageous leaders by connecting them to active and engaged learning and service opportunities. Saint Xavier is a 2023-2024 college of distinction and offers a transformative educational experience to nearly 3,500 students by providing a well-rounded curriculum accredited by the higher learning commission/north central association of colleges and schools. For the 2023-2024 academic year, sxu was recognized by colleges of distinction in the areas of nursing, business, education, career development, equity and inclusion, and military support. Sxu was also named a military friendly school by military friendly in 2023. Having recently celebrated 175 years of educational excellence in 2021, Saint Xavier offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs as well as degree completion programs taught by 125 full-time faculty and 294 adjunct faculty members within its two colleges: the college of liberal arts and education and the college of nursing, health sciences and business. Saint Xavier's school of nursing currently holds the no. 5 ranking for "best online graduate nursing program" (u.s. news & world report, 2023), and its graham school of management, which is aacsb-accredited, offers a top-ranked undergraduate business program for students (u.s. news & world report, 2023). Named a top 10 "best value school" among regional universities in the midwest and among the "best colleges for veterans" (u.s. news & world report, 2023), Saint Xavier is also recognized by u.s. news & world report for racial and ethnic diversity. In 2023, Saint Xavier welcomed its largest freshman class in the history of the institution. In 2019, Saint Xavier was awarded a $3 million grant from the u.s. department of education under its developing hispanic-serving institutions (dhsi) title v program (p031s190311). In 2021, sxu was awarded two additional grants from the u.s. department of education. Both five-year grants, enlace and conexiones are part of an intentional strategy to build additional supports and strengthen existing resources for sxu students. Sxu also ranks no. 2 in Illinois and falls within the top 10 in the greater midwest among not-for-profit institutions for economic diversity, with 59% of undergraduate students receiving federal pell grants for low-income students. According to college navigator, Saint Xavier is the most affordable catholic University in Illinois. Sxu also provides an excellent education for all students, regardless of socioeconomic status, ranking as a top performer in the greater midwest for social mobility (u.s. news & world report, 2023).
