Tenant rights: tenant protections and anti-eviction: in 2023 we served over 570 families in our tenant action clinic, 105 households in our tenant anti-harassment clinics, and 500 in our best start workshops. Through our stay housed la program work, we reached 30,000 people, and reached an additional 1700 through right to counsel coalition town halls and trainings. We educated families about their rights as tenants, introduced them to larger issues of governance, and supported them as they learned to be advocates for themselves with government officials. Led by Saje, the right to counsel campaign supported tenants as they advocated for the passage of unanimous motions in la city and county directing the ceo and city attorney's office to draft a right to counsel ordinance. Right to counsel will guarantee that renters who must appear in eviction court have the right to legal representation. It will also establish an emergency rental assistance fund and provide eviction protection services for tenants in the form of outreach and education and legal advice for la city and unincorporated county renters.
Healthy housing: building equity and transit: through our work with la city's reap program, we reached over 1,000 tenants struggling with habitability issues. With la county work, 50 community members attended our december 5 teach-in on code enforcement, which also included department of public health staff. Participants were able to share their perspectives on slum housing and make recommendations for improvements to the code enforcement system. In addition, our healthy housing committee doubled in participation, growing from 8 active participants to 22 over the course of the year. In july, we organized a massive mobilization of over 100 Saje members and coalition partners to advocate for fareless transit during the mayor of la's first meeting as la metro board chair. The mayor of la re-committed publicly to the promise of fareless transit. Our advocacy also resulted in enrollees in life, the fare discount program for low-income riders, receiving 20 free rides every month.
Equitable development: land use and la housing movement lab: through door-to-door canvassing, we reached 150 households with information on land use policies impacting south los angeles, including the metro area plan, the south la community plan implementation overlay, and ed1, mayor karen bass's affordable housing streamlining ordinance. 30 community members attended our people's planning school on los angeles' comprehensive housing incentive program, which culminated with participants submitting feedback on the program to the city. Through media outreach and an op-ed in the los angeles times, we advocated stronger tenant protections in the implementation of ed1, the affordable housing streamlining ordinance. We facilitated and conducted focus groups and listening sessions in the effort of the city of los angeles' affirmatively furthering fair housing and provided resident feedback, ensuring that impacted community members have their voices heard by the city. Saje's corporate landlord tenant association organized to defend measure ula.
Saje engages in community outreach and education efforts on variety of topics.
