Program areas at San Francisco Bicycle Coalition
In 2022, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition focused on its core goal of increasing the number of people bicycling. A key part of this effort is to expand and improve the city's bicycling network. This year we advanced our vision for a complete, cross-town bike network system that is safe and welcoming for people of all ages. We had limited in-person work with volunteers, members and community groups to get the goverment to translate this vision into on-the-ground projects and funding to projects to be constructed because of covid-19 and shelter in place orders. However, our staff continued to advocate for the slow streets program in San Francisco. Slow streets allowed for a reduction in car traffic and made city streets into public open space for residents to use for outside recreation time while being masked and socially distanced.
The sfbc had minimal campaign work during 2022 because of covid-19 and shelter in place order. We did continue to educate and endorse local city politicians running for city positions that were in support of a bicycling-friendly city. Sfbc continues to inform all candidates about how to work on behalf of great bicycling in San Francisco.
IN 2022, THE SAN FRANCISCO BICYCLE COALITION CONTINUED TO ADVOCATE FOR MORE STREETS IN SAN FRANCISCO TO BE OPEN FOR RECREATIONAL OUTDOOR SPACE FOR BIKES, SCOOTERS AND PEDESTRIANS DURING THE CITY'S SHELTER IN PLACE ORDER, INCLUDING THE CLOSURE OF THE UPPER GREAT HIGHWAY AND JOHN F, KENNEDY DRIVE IN GOLDEN GATE PARK. WE CONTINUE TO ADVOCATE FOR SAFER STREETS FOR ALL USERS OF SAN FRANCISCO STREETS. We did win JFK Promenade as permanent people first street.
