Program areas at San Juan Citizens Alliance

Climate change: San Juan Citizens Alliance pursued retirement of polluting coal facilities in the four corners region, and cleaner sources of electricity for Colorado utility customers. The organization supported approval of renewable energy sources as replacement for coal-fired electric generation. SJCA provided public outreach and education to members of La Plata electric association to encourage forward-looking policies to support local, renewable energy sources.
Animas River: The organization advocated for improved public recreation access to increase public awareness of water quality and water quantity issues facing the Animas River.
Public lands protection: the San Juan Citizens Alliance spearheaded public outreach and education to obtain protections for 200,000 acres of undeveloped wildlands in the heart of the San Juan mountains and across the Colorado Plateau in Southwest Colorado. SJCA engaged the public to review and comment on development activities including proposed timber sales, oil and gas leases, and travel management plans to ensure the protection of wildlife habitat and quiet recreation uses.
