Program areas at SANTA MONICA Bay RESTORATION FOUNDATION The Bay FOUNDATION
The Ocean Resilience Program conducts research, monitoring and restoration activities in coastal marine habitats. Projects focused on kelp forest restoration, eelgrass habitat research and restoration, abalone species recovery, and oceanographic biophysical monitoring related to climate change. The restoration and enhancement of marine habitats increased ecosystem structure and function while supporting local recreational opportunities and related coastal economies. Data collected from these projects further our understanding of the impacts from climate change and informs adaptive management of these projects.
The Coastal Adaptation Program conducts research, monitoring, and restoration activities in coastal habitats such as beaches, dunes, wetlands, and streams. Projects this year focused on restoring dunes and beaches to protect infrastructure and increase biodiversity. These efforts involved community engagement and volunteer restoration events at the LAX Dunes and along the beaches of Los Angeles County. Data collected from these projects further our understanding of the impacts from climate change and informs adaptive management of these projects.
The Santa Monica Bay National Estuary Program, SMBNEP, is one of 28 national programs established under Section 320 of the 1987 Clean Water Act. The focus of SMBNEP for the year included a diversity of efforts to protect, enhance, and improve ecosystems to improve water availability and quality, enhance socio economic benefits, engage and educate the public, and increase resiliency to climate change.
