Program areas at Satellite Healthcare
Kidney dialysis in-center chronic kidney disease ("ckd") is a public health problem in the united states that impacts approximately 37 million americans. It is well known that hypertension and diabetes are two leading causes of kidney failure. The 2021 united states renal data system report shows that over 808,536 americans who live with end stage renal disease ("esrd"), close to 69.0% are treated by dialysis and 31% with a kidney transplant. Satellite Healthcare owns and operates 94 in-center hemodialysis facilities (Satellite dialysis) and home dialysis training centers (wellbound) providing a variety of treatment options to our patients. In 2022, Satellite Healthcare provided over 1,527,647 dialysis treatments and services to over 8,538 patients in California, Texas, new jersey, and tennessee.peritoneal dialysis and home hemo center: wellbound, a Satellite Healthcare company, is the first Healthcare services company to specialize in the delivery and support of daily home dialysis therapies through free-standing, patient-friendly centers of excellence. Our unique care model is built on the premise that early-stage patient education is the first step in an effective treatment program. As such, we dedicate significant resources to reaching patients before they require dialysis. Once dialysis is required, wellbound's goal is to enable nephrologists to easily offer self-care (home) dialysis therapies to their patients. We strive to empower patients to take charge of their health and experience the clinical and quality of life benefits associated with self-care dialysis. See also community benefit report below:we remained true to our goal of providing the highest quality, patient-centered care and never rested on its laurels. At our 94 centers, we provided more than 1.5 million dialysis treatments in 2022. Our patients and regulators expressed high praise for our efforts. An annual patient experience survey conducted by the centers for medicare and medicaid (cms) in spring 2022 showed that 87 percent of Satellite centers were rated 4 or 5 stars. In the 5-star ratings for quality awarded by cms, 62 percent of our centers achieved 4 or 5 stars. These ratings are no small feat and reflect the sentiments of important and influential audiences.in 2022, we opened new dialysis centers in honolulu, mountain view, san jose and sacramento, California so more kidney patients can experience the care delivered at Satellite. Satellite Healthcare acquired 4 kidney centers in Georgia and south carolina. In the year 2022, two new business ventures new day nutrition and national nephrology alliance were also started.we also lend our expertise, and for a fee, manage two dialysis centers in Hawaii and one in Texas, while performing billing services for a dialysis center in san diego and one other in California. Integral to our work is advocating for patients regarding care and coverage. The department of health and human services and the social security administration implemented indefinite medicare part b coverage of immunosuppressive drugs for kidney transplant recipients. This legislative victory is the direct result of advocacy by Satellite Healthcare, patients, caregivers, Healthcare professionals and the kidney community at large. October 2022 marked the start of enrollment in this new benefit.in 2022, our charitable contributions totaled $12.4 million. Satellite Healthcare supported 14 community events hosted by not-for-profit organizations that are working wonders in their local communities to improve the health and well-being of residents. These activities allowed us to collaborate with longtime community partners like the american kidney fund and the national kidney foundation on educational opportunities and advocacy efforts, among others. Additionally, we provided scholarships, internships and fellowships. We hosted our home dialysis academy of excellence, which brings 26 nephrology fellows from around the country to Satellite to garner training on home dialysis. Robust college internships allowed 59 students to learn about various aspects of Satellite from nutrition to nursing. In fact, we hosted four nursing students from dillard university in new orleans, exposing them to all facets of kidney care, in the hope they will become nephrology nurses. The stories we hear from our community-based efforts are amazing and we see the ripple effect, as the people we help pass on the benefits of that investment by helping others.
