Program areas at SCAN of Northern Virginia
For child survivors of abuse or neglect, Scan provides hope, helping foster youth reach permanent homes through the alexandria/arlington court appointed special advocate (casa) program. As a national affiliate, Scan recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers who advocate for children in Virginia's alexandria and arlington juvenile courts so every child who has experienced abuse or neglect can be safe, have a permanent home, and the opportunity to thrive. During the year, court appointed special advocates donated 4,843 hours with an estimated value of $157,833.37.
For parents and families, Scan's family programs teach parenting education that strengthens family bonds and builds a community to work through parenting challenges. Support groups, workshops, and specialized coaching are available to at-risk parents in english and spanish.
For organizations, Scan leverages research and industry best practices to transform spaces and culture to create safe spaces inhospitable to abuse. Scan's institutional abuse prevention program provides training, audits, and technical assistance to help organizations implement comprehensive child protection programs.
For the community, Scan's public education program raises awareness of child abuse and neglect issues, the power of prevention, and ways to support families and children by engaging leaders and the public.
