Program areas at Science Oriented Literature Arts and Education Foundation
The World Fantasy Convention, an annual event celebrating authors and artists in the field of fantasy. was brought to Columbus for its 42nd running by the Columbus WFC Committee, which became a member of SOLAE in January 2016. The convention brings together readers, authors, and artists to meet, network, and socialize. The convention also honors an author and an artist each year for distinquished contributions to the field. Those attending can participate in panel discussions with the authors and artists purchase books, artwork, and other merchandise related to fantasy and science fiction, and collaborate on projects related to those fields
The approximately 90 volunteers of our member organization Marcon organized and ran Marcon 51, a regional science fiction and fantasy convention that is held annually in Columbus, Ohio. Marcon provided its members with opportunities to attend panel discussions with noted scientists, authors, and artists; appreciate and purchase art in a variety of media with a science fiction fantasy, or science theme; purchase books and other merchandise related to science fiction, fantasy, and science; and meet, network with, and socialize with others who share an interest in scinece fiction, fantasy, or science
SOLAE continued its tradition of being a community sponsor of the State Science Day, the Ohio science fair showcasing science Projects of students ingrades 5 through 12 that were judged outstanding ar regional science fairs throughout Ohio. The Foundation sponsored three SOLAE Foundation Awards for Turning Science Fiction into Science Fact, with each award winner receivinga $800.00 cash prize. The Foundation also awarded five Honorable Mention cash prizes of $100.00 each to recognize those students whose outstanding projects did not quite merit the top award
