See Schedule OScott & White Memorial Hospital is a faith-based, nonprofit hospital providing exemplary patient care services to the residents of Bell County and the surrounding communities since 1904. Locations include Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Temple (BSW Temple), a 581-bed acute care hospital and Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's Medical Center, a 64 room children's hospital. Collectively, both locations as well as other outpatient departments function as a major patient care, research and medical education center of the Southwest and serve local, national and international patients.BSW Temple is affiliated with Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH), a faith-based nationally acclaimed network of acute care hospitals and related health care entities providing quality patient care, medical education, medical research and other community services to the residents of North and Central Texas. As the largest not-for-profit health care system in Texas and one of the largest in the United States, BSWH was born from the 2013 combination of Baylor Health Care System and Scott & White Healthcare. Today, BSWH has over 1,250 patient access points including 51 hospitals, 612 specialty care clinics, 261 outpatient clinics, 160 primary care clinics, 30 pharmacies, 31 ambulatory surgery centers, and more than 7,100 active physicians. The system also includes a state certified health maintenance organization, the Scott and White Health Plan and the Baylor Scott & White Quality Alliance accountable care organization both covering over 1,200,000 lives.BSW Temple is one of the system's two flagship hospitals and has been offering innovative and patient-centered care to our neighbors across central Texas for more than 120 years. BSW Temple is a fully-accredited hospital which operates the only Level I trauma center between Dallas and Austin and provides a broad spectrum of hospital and clinical services which include heart & vascular, cancer care, transplantation, women's services and neurosciences. The medical center recently received Magnet nursing designation. BSW Temple is also home to Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's Medical Center, the only children's hospital between Dallas and Austin. During the fiscal year, BSW Temple admitted 30,690 patients resulting in 169,442 days of care; delivered 2,998 babies and received 72,903 emergency department visits. Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's Medical Center admitted 3,200 patients resulting in 13,890 days of care and received 36,822 emergency department visits. Additionally, these hospitals provided community benefits (as reported to the Texas Department of State Health Services and in accordance with the State of Texas Statutory methodology) of $225,713,740 and provided community benefits (as reported on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 990, Schedule H) of $142,640,981 during the tax year. The Texas Annual Statement of Community Benefit Standard includes approximately $69,406,498 of unreimbursed cost of Medicare that is not included in the IRS Form 990, Schedule H.See Schedule H for more information regarding these services and how the hospitals promote the health of the communities.
See Schedule OOne of the cornerstones of BSW Temple's mission is providing quality patient care with a focus on research aimed at discovering cost-effective ways to treat patients, increasing patient safety, improving quality, and focusing on better outcomes. Research is led through a multidisciplinary team comprised of principal investigators, contracts and finance specialists, compliance and regulatory specialists, research coordinators, nurses, managers and directors, data analysts and lab assistants, among others. BSW Temple supports research, directly or through Baylor Scott & White Research Institute (BSW Research), in many areas, including oncology, cardiovascular, applied health, bone, joint and spine, neuroscience, and trauma and mental health, among others. The following is a brief snapshot of select clinical, translational, and applied health programs conducted in the past year:Cardiovascular research: BSW Temple holds a strong cardiovascular portfolio. Each year, we participate in clinical trials examining therapeutic and surgical approaches and outcomes, new medications and new devices. Our cardiovascular research has included work in the following areas: aortic valve disorders, mitral valve disorders, vascular/TAA conditions, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure.Oncology research: We conduct clinical trials aimed at advancing the knowledge around screenings, prevention, diagnostic, and treatment options for cancer patients and individuals who have a high risk to develop cancer. The oncology research program supported studies in the following areas: pediatric cancers, glioblastoma and other neuro, colorectal and other GI cancers, solid tumors, and skin cancers. Additionally, we continued our work with registries and biobanking projects that help study tissue and other bio-samples for the purposes of understanding how cancer develops.During the year, BSW Temple supported clinical research development costs, research papers and studies through BSW Research, at a cost of $3,726,654.
See Schedule OBSWH is the primary teaching affiliate to the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center School of Medicine (the "School of Medicine"), with the BSW Temple main campus being the primary BSWH teaching location. BSWH and clinical facilities in College Station, TX, Round Rock, TX, Brenham, TX and Taylor, TX also participate in teaching activities. The School of Medicine is a fully accredited, four-year medical school. Currently there are 34 medical students receiving their clinical training at BSWH. Virtually all physicians on the Scott & White Clinic, an affiliate of BSWH, staff hold faculty appointments at the School of Medicine and teach classes for second through fourth year students. Baylor College of Medicine began their first year of Medical Student matriculation on the Temple Campus with a total of 40 students. BSWH also hosts rotations for fourth-year students from many other medical schools. The BSWH-Temple Campus of Graduate Medical Education currently consists of 38 ACGME accredited programs with a total of 463 residents and fellows in those programs. A Physician Assistant Program was started by University of Mary Hardin Baylor (UMHB) during FY 22 and there are 40 students participating in that program. Additional clinical programs include Podiatry, Psychology and Medical Physics with 18 residents.The main BSW Temple campus serves as the clinical campus for the Scott & White College of Nursing at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. A baccalaureate degree program is offered through the College of Nursing. BSW Temple also facilitates the clinical training of registered nurses and licensed vocational nurses in cooperation with Temple College and Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas. A Master of Science in Nursing degree program is offered through Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. In total, more than 2,000 nursing students rotate through BSW Temple annually. BSW Temple self-funded approximately $77 million to support medical education activities during the fiscal year ended.
