We successfully advocated to make the city of seattles temporary outdoor dining program permanent. Since its inception in 2020, more than 300 small businesses have used the cafe streets program to expand into parking spaces to create safe and activated streets for outdoor dining and shopping. This win will encourage more walking by creating interesting, vibrant, and welcoming streets and builds momentum for pedestrianizing streets around the city.
We continue to hold the city of Seattle accountable to its vision zero goal of zero traffic fatalities or serious injuries by 2030. We organized in communities most impacted by traffic violence to fix dangerous streets and build safe places for people to walk, bike, and roll. The organizing of the aurora reimagined coalition led to increased attention from the city and state and secured a major $50 million investment through the move ahead wa transportation package to transform a key section of aurora avenue, seattles most dangerous street. We also successfully advocated for increased city funding for sidewalk construction, school safety improvements, the vision zero program, and new protected bike lanes. Other highlights were the openings of the green lake outer loop and bike lanes connecting to climate pledge arena.
Whose streets our streets (wsos), a bipoc (black, indigenous, and people of color) led working group, built and maintained relationships with bipoc communities, conducted extensive outreach and research, and crafted a report of findings detailing how the city of Seattle should advance more equitable policies and practices towards creating safer streets with bipoc representation as part of its planning process.
