Bicycle Services Our organization fulfills its mission by offering the community affordable bikes, parts and services. In our unique bike shop, we provide services not found elsewhere in our community, selling approximately 700 used bikes each year. Recycle Reuse In 2023, we demonstrated our commitment to sustainability by recycling and reusing 1,623 bikes. Additionally, we estimate that we recycled 6661 lbs of scrap metal, processed 10,000 lbs of parts and accessories, and recycled approximately 1,100 lbs of tires. Youth Programming The Second Cycle offers Major Taylor Project, Earn A Bike, and Safe Cycle programs. With funding, we can create multiple ways to engage our populations regardless of their knowledge about cycling. These programs all have different emphases. Safe Cycle and Major Taylor Project focus more on active transport and advocacy for better cycling infrastructure. Earn a Bike emphasizes youth development and active transport through teaching and practicing mechanical skills. Bike Camp - We organized a spring and summer daytime urban bike camp, allowing youth to explore the city by bike as a cohesive group. In 2022, we had 47 bike campers participating over the course of 5 weeks. Earn a Bike - Our "Earn a Bike" program is a comprehensive learning experience where youth construct a bike from the frame up. This 6-session course empowers students to understand and repair their bikes progressively. In 2022, 18 students successfully completed the program and earned a bike. Bike Rodeo/Kidical Mass - Engaging 581 youth participants in 2023, our Bike Rodeo is an exciting event that blends bike safety education with fun and skill-building activities. Through a series of interactive stations, participants learn about road safety, helmet usage, and basic bike handling skills. It's a dynamic way to instill essential safety knowledge while fostering a love for cycling Juvenile Court Programming - We understand the importance of offering alternatives to at-risk youth. Through our juvenile court diversion programming, in 2023, we held 8 sessions that provide a path to rehabilitation and personal growth, diverting young people from the justice system and toward a brighter future. Adult Programming We are dedicated to fostering a vibrant community through the power of bicycles and for many they are a critical transportation need. We want bike riding to be accessible to everyone regardless of ability to pay. Community Tool Space - Our Community Tool Space served 180 participants in 2023, providing a welcoming environment for individuals to access tools and resources for bike maintenance and repair. This unique communal space is designed to empower community members to become more self-sufficient in bike maintenance, fostering a sense of ownership and knowledge within our diverse cycling community. BIPOC Programming - Our BIPOC Programs actively work to diversify the cycling community. In 2023, we hosted 6 BIPOC events with 65 participants. Community Events - Throughout the spring and summer, we organized 6 community Slow Rides to advocate for safer streets for cyclists, attracting a total of 112 participants.
