Food distribution: Second Harvest Food banks mission is to inspire and support Santa Cruz County to provide nourishment for all community members. Shfb acquires and distributes donated and purchased foods and united states department of agriculture (usda) commodities to people in need throughout Santa Cruz County and the pajaro valley. Second Harvest Food Bank results driven impact in the community included the distribution of 12.6 million pounds of Food providing 10.1 million healthy meals. Shfb promptly responds to the food-insecurity needs arising from natural disasters and ongoing recovery efforts. Recent collaborations with bipoc farmers and local fisheries are integral to shfbs sustainability land & sea initiative, contributing to the retention of funds within the local economy.
Education outreach: we provide nutrition education and outreach for individuals and families in need, bilingual peer nutrition education at sites throughout Santa Cruz County, as well as outreach and application assistance for the calfresh (Food stamps) program. Collaborated with pajaro valley unified school district and local partner agencies to provide hot meals to those affected by the pajaro floods. Partnering with watsonville community hospital to provide a nourish fresh market to provide Food to women who have given birth at the hospital.
