Program areas at Sego Lily Center for the Abused
January 2023: slcad invited a representative from operation underground railroad to present to the community about human trafficking and how to keep ourselves and our children safe during human trafficking awareness month. There were 8 attendees at the st. george Center for the division of deaf and hard of hearing. February 2023: slcad hosted the 13th annual sweetheart challenge event at Utah tech university in st. george. This continues to be a successful event that the southern Utah deaf community looks forward to every year. the purpose is to provide ways to strengthen healthy relationships within the deaf community. There were 40 attendees. February 2023: slcad provided virtual community education to the deaf community about healthy relationships. Erin watkins and mckenzi smith presented on a zoom call hosted by the sanderson community Center for the deaf and hard of hearing. We had 20+ attendees. March 2023: slcad hosted a community education event on gaslighting at the st. george Center for the division of deaf and hard of hearing. There were 8 attendees. April 2023: slcad hosted a community education event on children's mental health awareness at the st. george Center for the division of deaf and hard of hearing. There were 10 attendees, including 8 parents. April 2023: slcad was excited to host a virtual lgbtqia+ hangout and collaborated with karen pendleton from kindle light therapy and wellness, a facilitator at this support group platform. We had 15 attendees. May 2023: slcad once again hosted may bloom on our social media platform to raise funds to support survivors and their families. Each staff and board member posted their parts to educate the community about domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, Sego Lily's services, and many other resources. We raised 1,650. It was a great turnout. May 2023: the Sego Lily board and staff met in person for the board and staff strategic planning weekend at the cottonwood heights condo. This was an opportunity for the team to meet in person and make plans for the upcoming year. It was a great turnout due to our strong support system and exciting plans ahead. June 2023: slcad had a booth at Utah's pride weekend. We sold bracelets, stickers, and temporary tattoos for fundraising purposes and earned 400. We also distributed new materials such as brochures, chapsticks, pens, and lanyards. It was a successful event. June 2023: slcad was awarded the victims of crime act and Utah victim services program grants from the Utah office for victims of crime. July 2023: deaf dove and Sego Lily collaborated to host the survivor's retreat at the aspen deaf camp in snowmass, Colorado. We had 5 clients who participated in support groups, activities, short hikes, and holistic healing tools in a safe space. August 2023: slcad was excited to invite venesse guy from astro woke to the lgbtqia+ hangout on a zoom call with the identified lgbtqia+ signing community. Venesse taught them tools for healing from abuse and finding freedom from violence in their lives. It was successful. August 2023: slcad hosted a community education event on managing stress through art, led by southern Utah counselor kathleen tinker. She provided tools to help community members vent their stress in a healthy way and manage stress in their lives. There were 6 attendees. September 2023: slcad hosted a suicide prevention workshop in partnership with igniting change and kindle light therapy and wellness in lehi. Sego Lily counselors kathleen tinker and luba douziech, jim macedone from igniting change, and karen pendleton from kindle light therapy and wellness presented on suicide, its statistics, preventive care, and resources. We also had panelists who shared their experiences with suicide and the impact on loved ones. It was a sobering and educational event for the attendees. We had 20 attendees. September 2023: statewide advocacy victim and outreach (swavo) invited slcad to present their quarterly training in st. george. Erin watkins and mckenzi smith presented on making services accessible to deaf, deafblind, deafdisabled, and hard of hearing victims. There were over 60 attendees, both in person and via zoom. October 2023: slcad was excited to host the purple tie: under the sea gala at the sanderson community Center for the deaf and hard of hearing. the theme was "under the sea and beach," with attendees dressing up and socializing. the event included silent, dessert, and live auctions, as well as entertainment by clay anderson and master of ceremonies brad aldridge. There were over 200 attendees, and approximately 26,000 was raised from this fundraiser. October 2023: Sego Lily representatives luba douziech, northern Utah counselor, and timothy olakunle, northern Utah advocate, had the opportunity to share information about Sego Lily's services on the local abc 4 news program daily dash. It was a great experience. November 2023: slcad had a booth at the deaf bazaar at the sanderson community Center for the deaf and hard of hearing. We sold bracelets, stickers, and temporary tattoos for fundraising purposes and had a christmas tree with angel ornaments featuring christmas wishes from survivors and their families. Community members picked up ornaments to donate gifts. It was heartwarming to see the community come together and donate many items, bringing smiles to our clients' faces. December 2023: slcad board members and staff gathered for an appreciation dinner at a staff member's residence, where they enjoyed a potluck meal. During the event, staff and board members received awards in recognition of their support for Sego Lily's mission. Everyone had a great time and expressed their appreciation for one another before starting the new year.
