Program areas at Sego Lily Center for the Abused
January 2022: slcad invited the operation under railroad representative to present to the community about human trafficking and how to keep ourselves safe. It was human trafficking awareness month. There were 15 attendees. February 2022: slcad hosted the 12th annual sweetheart challenge event at Utah tech university in st. george. This continues to be a successful event that the southern Utah deaf community looks forward to every year. the purpose is to provide ways to strengthen healthy relationships within the deaf community. There were 40 attendees. March 2022: slcad hosted self harm awareness to teach the community about mental health and how to stay safe. There were 10 attendees. April 2022: slcad provided community education to the deaf community about sexual assault. the statistics and resources were provided along with how to get help from Sego Lily. There were 15 attendees. May 2022: slcad provided community education to the deaf community about elder abuse awareness. There were 6 attendees. June 2022: slcad staff hosted a second annual "Sego Lily's pride brunch" at ihop. We had lgbtq+ and allies gathered and ate brunch together. Sego Lily provided information on how to get help, as well as our high standards of client confidentiality. They had a great time. June 2022: slcad had a booth at the Utah's pride weekend. We had shirts to sell for fundraising purposes. We earned 100. It was successful because we now know what to prepare for next year after not being on the booth for the past two years. June 2022: the select health award program recognizes organizations that promote health and well-being, assist individuals with special needs, and support underserved populations. Sego Lily Center for the Abused deaf is honored to have been chosen for their select health award in 2022. They donated 3,000 and a marketing package that included our banner and a youtube video interview. This fund will be used as emergency funds for rent and utility assistance to increase clients' feelings of success and independence in meeting their housing needs. This video can be found on this link: httpsselecthealthorgwhoweareselec... august 2022: Sego Lily hosted a community education event which was "toxic or non-toxic in the relationship". It was a great interaction from the attendance and Sego Lily staff. There were 15 attendees. August 2022: Sego Lily board and staff were able to meet in person for the board and staff strategic planning weekend at the brian head condo. This was the time to reconnect in person and make plans for the upcoming year. It was successful and looking forward to the next year. September 2022: slcad hosted the suicide prevention workshop partnered with igniting change in lehi. We had Sego Lily counselors: kathleen tinker & luba douziech and jim macedone, mental health counselor from igniting change, present about suicide, its stats, preventive care, and resources. We also had panelists who attempted suicide and loved ones lost to suicide. It was very sobering and educational for the attendance. We had 30 attendees. Many wanted us to do it again next year. September 2022: Sego Lily hosted a "domestic violence & suicide preventive awareness candle vigil" where we met at a lake to pay respect for those who died from domestic violence and suicide. We provided education and resources for domestic violence and suicide prevention. Five people attended. October 2022: slcad was awarded the underserved grant from the dept. Of justice under the office of violence against women. Slcad is looking forward to expanding more programs and outreach to the deaf and hard of hearing community over the next three years. October 2022: after a three-year hiatus due to covid-19, slcad was excited to host the purple tie: roaring 20s gala at the sanderson community Center for the deaf and hard of hearing. the theme was the 1920s and people dressed up and socialized. the event included silent, dessert, and live auctions along with entertainment given by lisa mcbee. There were over 200 attendees. It was the highest recorded number of attendees in the history of the gala. Around 24,000 was brought in from this fundraiser. October 2022: Sego Lily representatives: erin watkins, executive director; and mckenzi smith, outreach program coordinator had an opportunity to share about Sego Lily's services with the local abc 4 news program daily dash. It was a great experience. December 2022: slcad hosted a community event that was called "angel tree" at the southern Utah deaf and hard of hearing programs in st. george. the community members came and picked up the ornaments to donate gifts to Sego Lily's clients and their families. It was heartwarming to see the community come together and donate a lot of items. Those gifts brought smiles to our clients' faces.
