The Seiu Education and Support Fund empowers workers through education and training programs, as well as raising standards and promoting high quality jobs. They manage workforce development grants, develop educational materials, and convene health and safety trainings. Additionally, they undertake public information efforts. They have developed innovative early childhood apprenticeship programs for center-based early childhood educators and an on-the-job training program for family child care providers as an alternative career pathway. They also produced and piloted a peer mentor program.

Program areas at Seiu Education and Support Fund

Designed and implemented high impact, worker-centered, professional development and training for family child care providers in ma, ri, and ca, where in total over 43,000 early childhood educators are eligible for a variety of benefits -- from free workshops focused on topics related to child development and running a small business, to scholarships to increase access to higher Education. Made strides to increase the number of family child care providers serving their communities via pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship pathways to enter the field. Provided leadership development opportunities via peer mentorship, peer leadership, and peer facilitator roles as well as through learning cohorts. Shared our methodologies nationally via presentations at state and national conferences. Developed and launched the green janitor health certification, earning accreditation from the usgbc-la, and offering training in five cities. This certification sits at the intersection of good jobs and climate justice, with a focus on reducing energy and water consumption, diverting waste, green cleaning, and workplace safety and health. Launched sexual-assault prevention curriculum and training for janitorial workers in portland. Provided high impact, worker-centered, professional development and training series, online learning, individual and group (workplace-based) grants, and higher-education degree scholarships for our ma public sector workforce (with over 8,000 eligible workers) who deliver critical human services and Education to some of the state's most disadvantaged individuals and communities.
