Program areas at SGA
Seven Generations Ahead implemented its nationally-recognized fresh from the farm/farm to school program in chicago public schools, and provided additional metro area schools with training and resources. Fresh from the farm - which combines classroom cirriculum organic farm expeditions farmer classroom visits, school gardens, chef demonstrations, and local food procurement - had a positive impact on children's health eating choices and awareness of where their food comes from.
Zero waste/food scrap composting - sga works with schools, businesses, institutions, and municipalities to provide support for all steps along a path to zero waste from planning to implementation. Zero waste is fundamentally a different approach to managing materials - one that seeks to emulate natural cycles in which all materials are designed to become resources for others. The process involves starting with the 3 r's (reduce, reuse, recycle/compost) and continually making incremental changes to practices while creating no emmissions that harm the health of the planet or its inhabitants.
Sustainability planning - works with communities and regions to support local sustainability plan development & implementation. These plans help communities reduce their impact on climate change, improve community health, conserve and enhance existing natural resources. Sga convenes stakeholders from all sectors and institutions within the community to develop & implement community sustainability plans. Partnered with chicago metropolitan agency for planning & metropolitan mayors caucus to engage community leaders in building concensus around a core sector sustainability indicators.
