Program areas at Shirlington Employment and Education Center
Approximately 456 jobs were placed with SEEC day laborers at the new SEEC office. The SEEC staff assisted with jobs referrals, collecting unpaid wages, assistance with job applications, rental assistance, referrals to medical service at the Arlington Free Clinic for those injured on a job and/or illness, as well to Arlington Food Assistance Center for food.
SEEC has received donations to purchase meals from local Latino restaurants to provide to the Latino laborers during the pandemic. SEEC has offered training to day laborers and inmigrant women on how to start their own business when they are unable to find regular employment. One class was offered to clients on how to use biodegradable products when cleaning houses.
SEEC established a close working relationship with several other Safety Net nonprofit organizations. The Arlington Food Assistance Center has been a major source of support for the day laborers providing them with supplemental foods on a weekly basis. Four churches are also assisting with weekly and bimonthly donations of bag lunches for our clients. A total of 2,220 bag lunches were provided this year.
