Simpson Street Free Press (ssfp) delivers high-impact, core-subject academic instruction during after-school and summer hours. We publish newspapers. Our writers are kids. Central to ssfp pedagogy is across-the-curriculum instructional practices. Student writers conduct research, use technology, write and read extensively. They learn transferable academic strategies and acquire practical job skills. Content published by ssfp focuses on science, history, geography, and literature. Ssfp operates a network of youth book clubs and publishes student-written book reviews. Ssfp students encounter predictable connections to the school day. Lesson plans are expertly designed to support school-day learning. School grades, reading and math scores, and school-day attendance are measured. Ssfp students participate in civic discourse and influence their peers. We expand program hours during summer semester. Credentialed and experienced volunteers provide editing support. Our goals are to foster youth literacy and spark student achievement.
