Program areas at SML Good Neighbors

Summer camp is open to children of Franklin County and Bedford Counties of Virginia and operate for 4 weeks Mondays through Thursdays from 8:00AM-3:00PM. Bus transportations is provided. Most of the children come from homes with limited means. The curriculum is constructed to prevent the summer slide in reading and math along exposing to children fun activities in science,creative writing theater performance envrionmental science etc. In addition many of these children have food shortage issues especially when free or reduced lunch programs are not available in the summer. SML Good Neighbors provides each child with breakfast lunch afternoon snacks 6 meals for the weekend to take home. There is no cost to any family.
All costs include salary expenses associated with this program along with the scholarships awarded. This scholarship program was started in 2022 from a matching donation. Called the Nancy Horton scholarships 3 were awarded in 2023 for a total of $7800. Scholarships are awarded to previous student participants in the Good Neighbor's programs. Scholarship funds are restricted and all expenses above the amount of scholarships awarded are borne by the SML Good Neighbor's operating budget. No scholarship donations are used for expenses to administer.
Student Enrichment in the Arts is an after schools program that provides Bedford and Franklin Counties exposure to theater arts. The Virginia Children's Theater provides the instructions and SML Good Neighbor volunteers assist and provide all cost and snacks to these children.
