Program areas at Society for Music Theory Iu Jacobs School of Music
Publish Music Theory spectrum (scholarly journal, publish Music Theory online (scholarly online journal), publish smt-v (scholarly vlog/video journal), publish smt-pod (scholarly podcast). Over 1,000 members took advantage of services in 2023. Music Theory spectrum published eleven full-length articles and a colloquy with eleven contributes, as well as two shorter articles and 4 book reviews, and had over 100 institutional subscribers. Music Theory online published four new issues, smt-v published six new videos essays, and smt-pod published eleven new episodes.
Host annual scholarly conference including special-topics peer-learning workshops for both graduate students and scholars. Provide diversity and family-care grants to enable a diverse population to attend. In november 2023 we met jointly with the american musicological Society in denver to participate in professional development workshops and engage in scholarly exchange. Eighteen members received travel grants totaling over 8,000 to partially offset expenses.
Provide subventions for the publication of academic work in Music Theory; run competitions and application review processes for authors seeking publication subventions, provide grants for scholars to host special-topic academic conferences. During 2023, eight scholars received grants totaling just under 7,000 for publications and conferences, and two scholars received a dissertation award.
