Program areas at Sonrisas

Seeding Solidarity is a collaborative food sovereignty program that provides BIPOC, immigrant and other marginalized families access to fresh, seasonal vegetables while creating a space to cultivate shared values, uplift food literacy, and reconnect participants? awareness towards community care. Collectively, we create ongoing support through knowledge shares, workshops, and direct consultation in land stewardship, gardening, and traditional ways of preparing food. This year we increased our number of solidarity shares to support 130 participants, including weekly educational opportunities, and monthly community gatherings.
Nicaraguan Solidarity & Mutual Aid Program The Nicaraguan Solidarity & Mutual Aid Fund offers a support network and educational opportunities to combine tangible community support and solidarity awareness with Nicaraguans and other marginalized community members. The fund supports our community programs in Nicaragua that include a community-run pharmacy, emergency medical care access, school lunch program, and clothing, health & educational access for rural community members. In the US, this program supports a popular education collective, mutual aid fund for under-resourced community members, and immigrant support network.
Youth Nature & Agricultural Program is an educational initiative that combines our reconnecting to nature and stewardship of the land. This included a series of youth nature immersion classes, educational services on native plant tending & land care, youth-led educational series & gatherings, an installation and care of an Indigenous plant garden, construction of raised garden beds & greenhouse, seasonal tending of the garden, gardening education workshops, harvest & preservation of food for distribution, solidarity medicine making, community garden days, community nature walks, native woodland plant restoration and nature immersion retreats.
