2023 Annual Report Sons & Daughters of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Inc. 933 Wiliwili Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96826 442sd.org. EDUCATIONAL 1. Began work to update/redesign our website - our primary means of educating the public on the legacy of the 442nd. 2. Answered numerous inquiries from across the US and Europe concerning 442nd history, including putting people in touch with 442nd families and informing people about their family who served in the 442nd. 3. Served as a "topic expert" for National History Day for students with a 442nd project by telephone and zoom calls. 4. Assisted an author in fact-checking for her children's activity book based on the 442nd. 5. Accepted donations of WWII memorabilia (photo albums, medals, artifacts) and placed in the 442nd Legacy Center (formerly 442nd Veterans Club). 6. Participated in the annual Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) award ceremonies at 23 high schools on Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai. We gave to the JROTC program our Okage Sama De Medal and Award Certificate for these 23 presentations. Cadets were chosen by the JROTC instructors for the following qualities: best living up to the values of the WWII Nisei soldiers - these values being Sense of Duty, Responsibility, Sacrifice, Honor, Loyalty, Persistence, Quiet Endurance, Pride. 7. Gave historical lectures at Bellevue College and DAR Chapter in Washington on the 442nd RCT. 8. Began image database project for 442nd photos. 9. Continued in sixth year of 442nd Archives Project at University of Hawaii's Hamilton Library to digitize and index National Archives WWII documents and records concerning the 442nd RCT story and its history. HISTORICAL 1, Planned and executed the 80th Anniversary 442nd Banquet: three historical speakers, two WWII Veterans and three WWII Widows; Governor of Hawaii; TV coverage; nine JROTC cadets from Punahou School served as Color Guard. 2. Continued Soldier Bios (renamed Soldier Stories) Project: over 300 now researched, written, and available on our website at 442sd.org. 3. Updated our 442nd Soldier Stories Style Guide to include additional historical material; trained three new researcher/writers. 4. Had 12 Soldier Stories published in Hawaii Herald newspaper during the year. 5. Gave a historical presentation on the 442nd for visiting executives of the National Museum of the U.S. Army and The Army Historical Foundation. PATRIOTIC 1. Planned and executed the presentation ceremony for a 101-year-old Veteran to receive the French Legion of Honor for WWII combat in France. 2. Purchased 100th Infantry Battalion flag and 522nd Field Artillery Battalion flag; purchased 27 battle streamers for the 442nd and 100th flags. 3. Displayed our 442nd RCT flags and guidons at various ceremonies and functions. 4. Attended ceremony on USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor to observe the 78th anniversary of the end of WWII. MEMORIAL 1. Attended the funeral and burial of one 442nd Veteran, displaying our flag and his company guidon. 2. Attended annual Memorial Day ceremonies of both the Governor of Hawaii at the State Veterans Cemetery and the Mayor of Honolulu at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, displayed our flags and presented a memorial wreath or lei at each. 3. Attended annual Memorial Service for the 442nd RCT, 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate), Military Intelligence Service, and 1399th Engineer Battalion at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. 4. Attended annual Japan Peace ceremony on Pearl Harbor's Ford Island on December 8 hosted by Consulate of Japan. 5. Attended annual Veterans Day ceremony on SS Missouri in Pearl Harbor. BENEVOLENT 1. Researched for two Dutch relics hunters in France who found a WWII dog tag in order to put them in touch with deceased soldier or his family. 2. Researched for a French couple to locate the WWII soldier or his family who carved his name/unit into a wooden beam in their barn in 1944. 3. Accepted from a local gardener three hybrid hibiscus plants originally propagated by a 442nd Veteran and gave to our members to nurture and continue this unique flower named for the 442nd.
