Program areas at Southeast Climate & Energy Network
Our work is driven by the active member engagement of over 70 member organizations, which we implement through outreach initiatives that involve direct contact with individual members, multiple working group calls and by convening our network through virtual and in person conferences. To further support our members and communities, SCEN provided stipends and sponsorship support to community based member organizations in 2023
SCEN offers a variety of capacity building trainings designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of individuals and groups. These trainings cover key areas such as leadership development project management advocacy fundraising and grant writing storytelling policy reform legal expertise community organizing amopng others. The Goal is to empower participants to be more effective in their work and contribute to the growth and sustainability of their organizations or initiatives. SCEN also provides essential capacity building and technical assistance to help organizations apply to and obtain funding for member led projects. Our work seeks to position SCEN as a key hub for advancing a just energy transition in the Southeast. To track progress , we use surveys convenings calls and direct communication allowing us to adapt inreal time based on member feedback.
In 2023, SCEN officially launched the SCEN for Southern Communities Tour, outling its first year activities. This program brings the thought leadership of Southern leaders - who helped shape the Southern Communities for a Green New Deal Policy Platform in 2021 - directly to frontline communities. Through the Tour, SCEN provided regranting dollars, regional visibility and on the ground capacity to selected organizations and communities across Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi. Examples of impactful projects include the assembly and distribution of over 175 hurricane and disaster preparedness kits in rural coastal Georgia, supporting a community energy fair in Birmingham and planting a fall community garden with a mutual aid network in Mississippi. Overall SCEN allocated $70000 in direct funding and committed nearly 500 hours of staff support through the Southern Communities Tour, benefitting frontline communities across the region
