Program areas at Southern Exposure

SoExs Projects & Exhibitions are developed and produced by our Curatorial Council, a cohort of primarily BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and immigrant artists who lead SoExs creative vision. With an emphasis on commissioning new work, SoEx supports artists in the development of large-scale projects, events, performances, and workshops to create a forum on contemporary sociopolitical and cultural issues and new modes of production that focuses on historically marginalized communities.
SoExs Artists in Education (AIE) programs catalyze leadership opportunities for young artists in underserved communities, enabling them to utilize their artistic vision to express their perspectives on the social issues that impact their lives. SoEx provides socioeconomically disadvantaged Bay Area youth the opportunity to excel in creative fields of study; learn valuable artistic, critical thinking, and leadership skills; and interact positively with peers and adult mentors. All youth in AIE programs have the opportunity to exhibit their work to peers, family, and community members in SoEx gallery exhibitions. AIE also presents paid professional teaching opportunities for local artists.
SoExs Alternative Exposure (Alt Ex) re-granting program, established in partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, provides vital seed funding to nascent initiatives and projects that primarily serve, highlight, or lift up historically marginalized artistic communities within the Bay Area. Alt Ex provided $65,000 in grants to local projects and artists in 2023.
