Program areas at Southwestern Ahec
Work force development - a variety of educational programs are designed and implemented to meet the needs for professional development and continuing education of health and human service providers. Community-based experiential training (cbet) support interprofessional teams of health professions students with first-hand knowledge of how social determinants of health affect the health and well-being of residents of underserved communities while supporting the needs of community sites "in the trenches." Health careers awareness programming is delivered to students k-16 to encourage and develop an awareness of interest and skills in health careers for youth from ethnic and racial backgrounds under-represented in the health professions. Health education is incorporated into programming to improve the health and wellness of the community, such as opioid awareness, immunization and oral health activities. Community health worker (chw) training and the chw apprenticeship programs prepare chws for meeting Connecticut's certification requirements.
Public health - the immunization action plan program is designed to provide community education and outreach services to bridgeport families whose children may need to be immunized; assist pediatricians and primary care providers to comply with state regulations, and maintain the Connecticut immunization registry and tracking system (cirts) with up-to-date bridgeport data.
